Translation: Rainy Resort (Seiko Matsuda)

The music for Rainy Resort is by Masamichi Sugi. He wasn't initially a part of the Happy End circle, but the year after this Seiko album came out, Eiichi Ohtaki invited Sugi to join the sessions for the second Niagara Triangle album.

The words vs. music contrast here is really something. The lyrics begin with bitterness, frustration, and unsurprised disappointment, and by the end of the song, all those emotions have given way to something quieter, deeper, darker, more final. But Sugi's setting is pure bubblegum pop. Nothing sad at all about that synth riff.

There's a "rainy, rainy" tag in the choruses that I left out of the translation.

Even the windshield wipers are sulking,
that's how heavy the rain is.
How about that.
Our long-awaited holiday is ruined.

We listen to your car stereo
in silence.

A pot of black tea.
A basket lunch.
The rainy resort around us.

The tires are losing traction,
the car drifts,
and I have to grab hold of you.

You're scaring me this way
on purpose, aren't you?
Horrid man.

The weather forecast said it would clear up.
Instead there's a curtain of rain
away over the cape.

When you killed the engine,
the sound of the rain
began suddenly to
beat against my heart.

There's been a change for the worse
in the weather of our love.
Let's leave this place
and go home.
